BMW Concept 5-Series Gran Turismo

Have a look at BMW's 5-Series Gran Turismo concept

If you thought BMW was all niched-out after the X6, think again. These concept pictures revealed today show the new ‘Concept 5-Series Gran Turismo’, which we expect to see at Geneva next month.

We reported on the concept last year, when BMW first announced its plans for a ‘Progressive Activity Vehicle’, based on the 5-Series platform (like the X6, 6-Series and X5). This is that car. Weird, isnt’ it?

It’s a huge 7-Series-sized thing (the car in the pics is on 21-inch alloys to give you an idea of scale) designed for buyers who want something big but don’t want the neighbours bitching about them having an unfashionable SUV.

The tailgate is split – just like that of the Skoda Superb – so you can use it like a hatch or a saloon. Inside, you can slide the rear seats in favour of leg room or boot space, and BMW claim that if you slide the rear seats right back you get roughly the same leg room of a 7-Series.

A swooping roofline accompanied by frameless doors and a panoramic glass roof adds to that sense of space – in fact, head room is similar to that of an X5.

It’s easy to take a swipe at BMW for carving out yet another niche. But you can’t blame them for getting the most out of a platform, even if the market may receive it with some surprise. Then again, some people thought the X6 was an answer to a question nobody asked, yet it’s sold well in the UK.

This could go the same way (or it could follow the Mercedes R-Class to an embarrassing flop). We’re not expecting the ‘Gran Turismo’ moniker to make it onto the production models and that tartan upholstery and chocolate-ripple interior colour scheme isn't real either. Which is probably a good thing, unless you like brown.

Have a look here for the full skinny on the related 5-Series.

What do you think?

Maybe it looks different in the flesh, but my instinct is just one word - Mondeo....

This picture actually looks better than the one I saw this morning in another blog. At least here it doesn't look hideous, it just looks...strange.

This is all well and good BMW, but I want something thats a little bit higher. No no not an X5, thats too high. Just a fraction higher... Oh and I want a wagon, but I really want to compromise my rear passenger headroom. X6? hmmm no not quite what I want. So I guess you'll be off to make the BMW 5.5 Series Progressive Wagon Sports Activity Utility Coupe Lifestyle Lifty Uppy Fastback then? GREAT!! Just what I need....this week.

I thought BMW did have a design edge to them? Was this one of the last designs by Bangle? It shows. It looks ridiculous. I mean why would we want another R-Class? That was a huge flop wasn't it? Remember, 6 seats, looks like an estate and has 4x4. Why don't you save £40k and buy an A6 Allroad, does the same job and is upper class. I think that BMW should be ahead of their competitors, not below. This is a step too far. The X6 shows this. If you want a fast BMW estate by a 5-series estate. Does the same job and has enough space in the boot. It also comes in the 'M' mode. With more car companies struggling with their finances nowadays, why make a niche, that they know will fail. Are they trying to shoot themselves in the foot? We don't know what goes on in the mind of the German executives, but what I could say that is that BMW needs a new design direction. Engineering is not enough.

So... it's a 5series, bot not a sedan cause it's got no bootlid & neither a touring cause, well it just ain't an estate. but it's got a big tailgate, which makes it...wait...on tip of my tunge...erm...a HATCHBACK for gods sake!!!!!!!! but because it ain't a competitor to a of a 6, mondeo & insignia (which looks nearly the same round the back) who are straight middleclass, BMW can't possibly call it that way and making it just an other 5series-version, they're going hiddeous marketing berserk by calling it "progressive activity sedan" or "grand tourismo" - which it can't be, cause it's got 2 many doors & if that are 21"-wheels, it's about as high as the 7series (1.49m) which is at least 0.15m to much!
