Maranello’s new ride

Ferrari to open not-at-all-tacky theme park in Abu Dhabi with F430 rollercoaster. Oh dear

Ferrari rollercoaster

Despite the fact that the money is haemorrhaging from the Arab Emirates faster than the oil it's built on, Ferrari is about to open its very own theme park in Abu Dhabi.

Two years in the making, Ferrari World will be a gigantic, tasteless altar to greed and consumption, a shrine to everything that's a bit sickly about having too much money and nowhere sensible to spend it.

Ferrari World is the largest indoor theme park on Planet Earth, with a 60 x 40m prancing horse on the roof, just in case you actually are navigating your way here from deep space.

Among the 20 rides on offer inside will be an F1 experience that claims to hit speeds of 125mph and provide punters with the opportunity to feel the same sort of G-Forces that a driver endures at race speeds. This we like. On paper.

Less convincing is the F430-based rollercoaster in which cars that look a tiny little bit like F430s will go head-to-head in a race that obviously isn't really a race.

There will also be six restaurants on site, all of them selling different types of Italian cuisine. Restaurants and rollercoasters. That classic combination.

You know what would be awesome? If they networked about 12 'OutRun 2' arcade machines so that up to 12 people can compete in a big race on OutRun. It is, after all, a "Ferrari Official Licenced Product", as my PS3 version keeps reminding me every time I boot it up...

Do you know what ? I'd rather ride a real F430. Can't quite work out why.....

It'll take up so much space, but in the end all the rides will all be the same and the spaghetti will taste like cabbage.

How much dilution can an exclusive brand like Ferrari take?? At some point in time, every person on this planet will have some Ferrari byproduct. So much for exclusivity. Potential Ferrari car buyers will look elsewhere. Ferrari wil be sorry as hell when that happens, and it's going to happen if they continue this way... Ferrari, spend your precious energy making super cars, not rubbish!

This is such a ridiculous idea. Ferrari hardly needs to strengthen their brand-name and even if they did, a theme-park seems quite silly to me. Agree with MasiMan completely... I would even say my respect for Ferrari has gone down a notch. But if I ever happen to stop by Abu Dhabi, would I still go to the themepark and buy my own set of Ferrari-stamped carbon-fiber kitchen utensils? Yes, yes I probably would.. =).
