The next few years, we’re told, will be all about downsizing. Smaller house, smaller family, smaller dog.
Which is why Mazda has created a mini SLR Stirling Moss for the Frankfurt Motor Show this September.
They call it the MX-5 Superlight, and it’s a perfect replica of McLaren-Mercedes’ elongated speedster… but exactly three-eights the size.
Maybe. Mazda hasn’t actually admitted the Superlight is an SLR Stirling Moss for mini-people – they simply describe it as ‘a pure show car… with a radical exterior design requiring no windshield, and sporty chassis settings’ – but just look at it.
Not, we must stress, that looking like the SLR Stirling Moss is a bad thing. Far from it. Mazda hasn’t released any technical details on the Superlight yet, but we wouldn’t expect its underpinnings to differ greatly from the current MX-5.
However, Mazda has gone to pains to stress that the Superlight is merely a concept and won’t reach production. A shame – maybe it’s those mysterious wheels which appear to generate their own sunlight?

I never understand why anyone would want a roadcar without windscreen. Spitting out flies is not my favorite pastime. But I'm all for superlights, as long as it isn't about sodas. @120Y: at least they left out the doorhandles...

And the wingmirrors! But the DS-mirror on top of the dash is nicely retro.
