Just a little Mit’

Next year, Mitsubishi will release an all-new SUV, a Nissan Qashqai rival based on Evo underpinnings.

We don't know what it'll be called, but we do know it'll look a bit like this. Apart from more, y'know, metally and less pencilly.

Heavily based on the cX concept unveiled at the Frankfurt show, the new SUV will get Mitsubishi's signature ‘jet fighter' nose and, we're told, a range of eco-friendly petrol and diesel engines: no Evo-derived turbo monster version, we're afraid.

All the indications are that it should be a smart looking thing, though - and with the Qashqai and Skoda's new Yeti doing good business, it could be a tidy little earner for Mitsubishi.

The as-yet-unnamed SUV will be released in Japan next February, and should reach the UK next summer.

They should at some point do a RalliArt version with a turbo. Evo underpinnings deserve Turbo Power. Maybe for junior rallying?

If that SUV comes out looking anything like this drawing that would just be unfair to other car manufacturers! Sexy!

If it's based on the Evo I can't help thinking that platform doesn't really have the space to provide what a people carrier needs to have - the 4wd powertrain alone would knacker up the load space and make accessibility tougher. The only other practical option - basing it on the longer Grandis style platform - is too horrific to even think about. On the subject of hotter versions - remember this is Mitzi we're talking about. I can see them doing a dolled up Ralliart styling package like they did with the Colt, but I don't think they'll be able to resist doing a one-off version, maybe based around the 300hp unit but possibly detuned to 220-250.

It looks a little modeo-estate-ish...
