Fans of straight lines, right angles and cars that look like they were created by a six-year old rejoice: the Nissan Cube is finally coming to the UK.

This is the all-new Cube, unveiled this week at the LA Auto Show, and the big news is that it’ll finally be offered outside of Japan. Previously, the only way to get hold of a Cube in the UK was through a tortuous import process, but now you’ll be able to get one from your local Nissan dealer.

Visually, it’s in very much the same vein as its predecessor: tall, blocky, square and quite unlike anything else on the road. We can’t decide if those bigger, rounded wheelarches detract just a touch from the essential, er, cubishness of the design, but there’s no doubting that the Nissan designers have nailed their ‘quirky’ quota.

That assymetrical, wraparound rear screen is still present and correct, along with the refrigerator-style rear door. On the inside you’re looking at a five-seater with added quirkiness – lots of headroom, swoopy surfaces and the option of, ahem, shag carpeting. We couldn’t make it up.

In Europe, the Cube will be offered with the choice of a 1.5-litre diesel or 1.6-litre petrol engine, perhaps with the option of a CVT gearbox. Though it hasn’t yet been confirmed, we’d expect that we’ll see the two-wheel drive Cube instead of the four-wheel drive version.
