So the big news today, especially if you live in the Northeast, build cars for a living and are willing to spend over the odds to save the planet, is that Nissan is going to assemble its Leaf electric car in Sunderland. This means more jobs and lots more investment from the Japanese firm in a part of the country that hasn’t exactly been having a brilliant time of it of late.
But what does it mean for Average Us? The Leaf is important. It’s a full electric vehicle, but also a proper five-seat hatchback, not a Noddy car with a stereo. (Yes, G-wiz, we’re talking to you.)
It’ll be quite expensive though, even with a proposed government subsidy to recoup some of your initial outlay, and there’s still the factor of range. Unable to do more than approximately 100 miles, and taking a long old while to recharge at the precious few places where you will be able to plug it in, the Leaf is going to be more lifestyle choice than practical motoring solution for a while yet.
But this is a big moment nevertheless. If everybody’s second car was electric, and all city cars the same, the polar bears would be taking over in no time.

O.K, if a car is eco friendly than is's good right?? even if it looks odd, drives badly and is powered by AA batteries that run out (lets face it) quiet often??? But when it has a Diesel engine, a Vectra badge and can get you across Germany on one tank it makes it bad?? Then theres a problem about too much CO2 but if you think about it, it gets absorbed by trees which are cut down for Toilet paper, warmth, accommodation and sometimes even forests are cut down for another motorway which speeds your journey by 5 minutes, and who gets all the blamed?? The car, which only caused half of the problem in the first place, is that fair?? NO, it's not so some manufactures make electric cars, but than the electricity comes from those big stations which produce CO2 and in the end no one wins, but tons of people lose because they got a shi7 electric car that makes them look like an idiot and is not helping the environment in any way.

Well said Twister. Everyone's missing the point that the electric which powers these cars will be coming from power plants that damage the environment. UNLESS the large hydrogen collider project turns out a success, and we can create a new type of fusion to power the world. Or, we make loads of nuclear reactors to replace fossil fuel ones, then fire the waste into space.

I don't really like hybrid cars, if you want a real eco-friendly car, MAKE THE HY-WIRE CONCEPT BY GM!

Yawn. Another pointless electric car. Stop pissing about with these and concentrate on hydrogen Honda insight stuff. Then leave all the petrol for us folk with thirsty mx5s and 635 csi coupes to run...
