Driven March 2006
BMW was first to arrive at the diesel rag-top party back in 2004. Audi joined the fun a year later and now - at some point way beyond fashionably late - Saab's 9-3 TiD Convertible has arrived.
We can't tell if the Swedes were being cautious or just plain lazy, but with 25 per cent of BMW 3-Series Convertibles and 20 per cent of folding-roof Audi A4s now being diesel-engined, it's about time Saab got with the programme. Especially as the 9-3 Convertible is the best-seller in its segment.
At long last, Saab has slotted its smooth, powerful, 150bhp 1.9-litre TiD unit into the engine bay of the Convertible - and it works well.
While it's true that the interior suffers from a notable lack of touchpoint quality when compared with its German opposition, list prices for the Saab feel much nicer.
The range starts at £25,370, which is a grand less than the Audi A4 and £3k less than the BMW Three. You pays your money, you makes your sacrifices.
To coincide with the diesel launch, Saab is offering a limited edition, Cerulean Blue, 20th Anniversary version for an extra £775.
What this means for buyers is a set of unique 17-inch, double five-spoke wheels, parchment leather interior, blue detailing and a colour-keyed spoiler. Not to mention the smug knowledge that you've bagged yourself a bargain.
