This month
Not even professional race drivers get to have this much fun in one day. As a driving experience, it's hard to imagine how anything could top what is on offer at PalmerSport, near Bedford. From hustling race-readied sports cards like the Jaguar XKR and Porsche 911 around one track, to thrashing ClioCup racers with F1-style paddleshift gearboxes round another, to the awesome finale of the day - lapping Palmersport's fabulous South Circuit in a 170mph Formula Jaguar single seater - this KICK UP A GEAR® event had it all. The range of professionally-prepared cars on offer is mouthwatering and gave the Top Gear readers a real insight into so many aspects of car control, their own abilities and genuine racing speeds. "I can't believe how much grip there is on slick tyres," declared one ecstatic winner; "the paddle-shift gearchange on the Clio is so quick" shouted another. Everyone's laps were timed and their driving assessed in what is the stiffest test yet of any Top Gear / Airwaves winners. The standard of driving was high and hugely competitive - just nine points separated the winner from fifth place (115 to 106) - and with such a range of challenges (on circuit; off road skills; a wet auto test course), to win would mean having to score well on almost everything. Which is exactly what Richard Neil from Barnsley did, and boy, did he look pleased at the end of the day.
Since last month, the Airwaves British Superbike boys and WRC star, Matthew Wilson, have all been busy. Leon Camier and James Ellison were in action at Knockhill in Scotland on the 5th July for the two races of Round 6 of the British Superbike Series. And guess what? Camier won both races to lead the Championship by an enormous 78 points from...his team mate, James Ellison, second with 189 points after finishing fifth and third in Scotland. Meanwhile in Poland, Matt Wilson drove solidly to score another points finish (5th) in the 8th round of the 2009 World Rally Championship. He now has passed his 2008 best-ever points tally of 15 (he has 19 points) with four rounds remaining.
