Last orders for W427

Calling all well-heeled tradies...

Orders for the Holden Special Vehicles W427 are set to close at 5pm on April 28.

The most-powerful and most expensive Holden ever built is nearing the end of its production life.

And it's likely to be a little more exclusive than HSV initially hoped. The plan was for a production run of 427 units. When we last looked, HSV had found homes for about 120 or so.

Holden Special Vehicles managing director Phil Harding says the next couple of weeks or so is the last chance for customers to be part of a "once-in-a-generation automotive experience".

"We announced late last year the last build for the W427 would be mid 2009 and we now need to confirm orders for the final build of the program," Harding said.

It's hard to see a long queue forming. Those who got their Stubbies in a knot over the 375kW 7.0-litre four door at its introduction have probably already done the purchasing deed or been scared into a Clubsport by the W427's sobering $155K price tag.

While we wouldn't dare question the socio-economic demographic claims from HSV that BMW owners are tripping over their lattes to get into W427s, we sense there have not been many M5 trade ins.

HSV suggests that the W427 has received rave reviews from customers, the media and motoring aficionados. It also lauds an Australian auto magazine that described the car as belonging to a group of Australia's ' Top 10 most valuable cars'. We want to go on record here and now: don't blame us. It wasn't Top Gear Australia.

HSV's Harding wonders what the market for exotic muscle cars will look like in the future.

So do we.

Down the road, will there be a massive interest in a very pricy (if very quick) HSV model with such obvious links to its fleet-car roots?

"The purchase of a W427 might represent a savvy investment opportunity - as well as delivering a driving experience that is pure exhilaration and excitement," said Harding.

Or you may do your cash colder than buying Allco shares. Depends whether the W427 becomes the GT HO Phase Three of the Noughties.  Or a Peter Wherrett Sigma.

Can someone tell me if im wrong - but didnt hsv try and sell a similar high end car a few years ago??-i think it was a bit more trak orientated - i saw it a the brisbane motor show - about the same price!! They were hoping for a bit much i think at $150k-personally i think anyone who actually buys one will not get a good return unless they store it and dont drive it for 20years!!
