Lexus Celebrity Challenge is world's first all-hybrid race
It could be the slowest Celebrity Race since those Ford Telstar TX5s at Adelaide in 1986. Back after a two-year break, the high-profile crashfest will this year feature... Lexus CT200h hybrids! It's So You Think You're Australia's Next Celebrity Master Racing Driver's Got Talent. Sort of.
A whispering field of 27 Lexus CT200h hybrids will be punted by various people with perfect teeth and addresses in suburbs you're not allowed to visit, making it the first all-hybrid race event... in the world.
The celebs will be fighting it out for two awards; one for the overall winner and another Le Mans-style 'Index of Efficiency', an award for the least fuel used. In other words, an award for the fastest, and another for the slowest.
Lexus will use the celeb bash to give the underwhelming CT200h some profile in Australia. Never heard of it? It's a small hybrid Lexus designed to compete with the BMW 1-Series and Audi A1. A posh Prius, if you like.
The Celebrity Challenge precedes the 2011 Australian Grand Prix, on March 27. In Melbourne. Of course.
