Excellent, just like the 86 - which does make it hard to justify the premium...

2014 Subaru BRZ

What is it?

Practically the twin of the Toyota 86. Highlighting the difference is like splitting hairs. Anyone who says the slightly stiffer suspension in the BRZ is either a racing driver, or hallucinating. Mechanically, everything is near enough identical to the 86, the same package of slidey goodness and perfectly balanced and direct steering, and just the right amount of power from its 147kW two-litre atmo engine.

What’s it cost?

There’s the rub. The BRZ is pricier than the 86 – $37,150 for the manual, which is obviously the one you want. So it comes down to how exclusive you want your car to be – and how long the waiting lists are…
