A sneak peek at our new mag!
He's the only man who knows what really happened the day we lost motoring legend Peter Brock. And as the third anniversary of Brocky's death apporaches, his co-driver, Mick Hone, sits down with Top Gear's Peter McKay to remember that horrible day.
Here's a taste of his incredible interview, but for the rest you'll have to grab our September issue.
The last words between the two in the cabin, Hone thinks, were from him delivering the final pace notes. Then silence. "A pretty eerie silence, really. Peter was busy with plenty of lock on trying to recover control.
"We were going backwards, finally, when it hit really hard and bounced off, the rear flicking the Daytona back in the direction we were travelling."
The impact was extreme. "Like a plane crash, I imagine. It was severe even on my side. The windscreen smashed and we were showered in glass. Dirt was flying everywhere. Having a proper racing harness and proper competition seat, and the integrity of the chassis, meant I wasn't badly hurt. That I got out of that wreck alive is pretty amazing.
"The car shuddered to a stop. I didn't realise straight away what his condition was."
