Mitsubishi Lancer overall verdict

A decent all-round achiever, but is outclassed by many European offerings.
-
Comfort
The seats in the base models are a tad hard and unsupportive, but moving up the price sheets this becomes less of a problem. The cabin is well insulated from noise, but the comfort is spoiled by the poor ride quality.
-
Performance
On par for this class. Bigger 2.4-litre engine in the up-spec models has more poke but doesn't like to be revved. The Ralliart is a laugh, though.
-
Cool
Base models reek of retirement village, but in VRX or Ralliart trim with their Evo-like bodykits and big wheels, it's a menacing looking car. They wouldn't be as cool if it weren't for the Evo.
-
Quality
It's all put together properly and will outlast many of it's buyers, but the interior is awash with shiny plastic which lets it down.
-
Handling
Underdone suspension on standard models means an uncomfortable ride on anything but the smoothest roads and ordinary handling. The Ralliart's Evo-derived 4WD and suspension set-ups is in another league. Brilliant, really.
-
Practicality
The Sportback is the pick for better practicality; the sedan's boot opening is tiny. But once you're through the porthole of an opening there is a cavernous boot in both models.
-
Running costs
Class-leading warranty and cheap servicing are all good, but 7.7L/100km for the 2.0 and 8.9L/100 for the 2.4 means fuel consumption is in the upper ranges for this class. Insurance will be apocalyptic on the Ralliart, too.
