Of the big three French marques, Peugeot is the one struggling most to find an identity. Renault and Citroen have both made quality leaps but managed to keep their quirky sides pretty much intact, but Peugeot’s range lacks energy. Worthy, competent, but less solid than Germans and without the compensatory pizzazz.

308
$25,990 - $38,390
Enthusiastic attempt to inject real quality into the 307 segment. Fine, but making it goggly-eyed ugly wasn’t the stroke of genius we were hoping for. Falls short.
-
4007
$22,103 - $24,803
Mitsubishi Outlander-based soft roader with Peugeot's own diesel engine. If you want a diesel Outlander with some French charm, this is for you.
-
407
$39,990 - $73,500
Awfully ordinary entry into the dreary end of the Vectra market. Not even the best of the French contingent – the Citroen C5 has moved the goalposts to another field.
-
607
$73,500
If you thought the 407 was dull, this French ministerial runabout is hypnotically sleep-inducing. Don’t operate heavy machinery if you’ve just driven one.
