Driven: BMW 123d

I just wonder whether sometimes people in magazines ever realise a land exists outside of London. Because everyone's been rattling on about the BMW 118d as it only emits 119g/km of CO2 which means it'll slip into London's proposed alteration to the congestion charge entirely free.
But if you live outside of London, does this really matter?
There are two more diesels in the 1-Series range now, both of which still pay more than simple lip-service to the idea of low emissions motoring.
And the more powerful one, the all-new 123d with a twin-turbocharged set up, is obviously the one to go for.
This engine is simply brilliant. It's more refined than BMW diesels of old, it reacts to your throttle inputs as quickly as a petrol and yet you still get 54.3mpg out of it. There's no turbo lag, the turbo entry point is smooth - in fact, I can't think of anything I don't like about it.
So to everyone outside of the ridiculous congestion charge, this the 1-Series to go for.

Glad someone recognises that we don't all live in London and I'm sure that the engine IS one of BMW's best, but they've called it the "123". Reason enough not to buy it.
Engine sounds good, and the consumption fits my want-it formfit of 'green eco-performance. Pity about the body though -- this is probably the best of the 1-series, but it's still no raving beauty. On balance, I'll pass. Actually, of course it's no good anyway as there's no room for my bike in the boot -- bring back the Compact!!
