Michael Schumacher to race again?

Posted by Nick Trott at 5:00PM on Thursday 01 February, 2007 9 Comments

SchumacherThe Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport has reported on an interesting test that a certain M Schumacher is taking part in this week.

The world's worst car parker is, according to the paper, completing a two-day test with the Tony Kart team at the Muro Leccese circuit near the Italian town of Lecce.

Champions Tony Kart have reportedly got a prime seat going in the team after World Champion Davide Fore left for rivals CRG.

Perhaps I'm putting two and two together, and getting 1167.4, but here's some evidence to suggest Schumi is seriously thinking about returning to World Championship Karting:

  • Schumacher has never ruled out a return to racing, despite retiring from F1 last year.
  • Karting is his first motorsport love.
  • There's a seat available in a top team.
  • Since retiring, he has tested a kart at the Lonato circuit in Brescia.
  • He has also competed a 24-hour kart race in his hometown of Kerpen.
  • He has never abandoned karting - he even finished third in the second race at the final of the World Championships in 2001.

Does a man who has spent the majority of his life driving his balls off suddenly lose the urge to race? I don't think so. What about you?

  • I sincerly hope he does. Motorsport would not be the same without him! I regard him as the greatest of all time.

  • I have had the feeling that someone like him just would not be able to take to the sofa with a newspaper on a Sunday.

The drive it takes to get to where he did, doesn't just stop, unlike his car in Monaco on that bend...

  • I sincerely do not care. I am just glad that he is out of F1. He obviously has immense driver skills, but he made a mockery of them with his underhanded tactics.

  • I think he probably will return to some form of motorsport. Most former F1 drivers do something in their old age these days (Frentzen, Hakkinen and Alesi spring to mind).

  • I hope he doesn't return, let the man do some gardening or whatever. He practically ruined F1 and should not compete again.

  • It would be nice for him, but personally I would like to see him race in DTM or WTCC, or at LeMans, that's where he could show his real talent.

  • Regardless of the fact that his tactics are highly questionable, one cannot deny that he is the most talented, committed driver since JM Fangio, who won his last world championship in 1957 with Maserati. He was 46 years old, which means that Mr Schumacher has at least a few years to get another world title. Watch out Le Mans, and Karts and F1. You have all been warned!!

  • I think F1 is worse without him. I don't condone some of his tactics, but then again Senna was not against using a few himself! Good luck to him if he's going to give kart racing a go. At his age, sitting and watching all the other guys having fun can't be easy. So beware all other motorsports!

  • I think he should make a return but not to F1 due to the other drivers wanting a chance to get a 1st, 2nd, or a 3rd. Schuey has had his day and his F1 career is pretty much over. He should go into the WRC or try something different and become a champion some other way.
