Winning streak

Posted by Jamie Hibbard at 3:00PM on Sunday 15 June, 2008 6 Comments

Aston MartinI still can't believe that after 24 hours of proper, hard, old school racing, there was only a lap in it between the front running Audi and second place Peugeot.

Audi were pushed all the way, and nothing was sure until they crossed the line first.

The same was true for Aston Martin and Corvette in the GT1 class, Aston coming home a lap ahead of their rivals.

We're all super tired but happy, so now it's your turn to tell us what you thought of the race, and I'll put the comments up tomorrow if we ever get out of the carpark...

  • I was hoping the Pugs would win, but at least half my combination came true. Yay for Aston.

  • Well I lost one bet and won another, so financially it was very boring. But the actual race itself was actually more interesting than I thought (thoroughly beats F1 for interestingness). If it's always as tense and unpredictable as this, then I'm definitely having a carefully timed holiday in France in a year or two!

  • Amazing race this year.

Kristensen really showed how he has managed to win Le Mans seven times (now eight). The #2 Audi won the race on having the combination of speed and economy (doing a lap more than the Peugeot in dry and two laps in the wet for each tank of fuel).

Not only did it beat the very fast Peugeots but also managed to show the two other Audi cars how it's done.

Oh, and an amazing day for Danish sports car racing. An overall winner, a Danish team (with two Danish drivers) second in LMP2, a Dane coming in second in GT1 and a Dane coming in third in GT2. How's that for a little nation of 5.5 million souls?

  • Glad that Jacques Villeneuve didn't win, so he doesn't equal Graham Hill's Indy 500-F1 World Championship-Le Mans 24hr record, it wouldn't be right if the whinging-Canadian-who-wasn't-that-good-in-F1 does it!

Well done to the winning Audi though, despite being slower than the Peugeot, did well in the wet. Well done to McNish, top bloke always liked him ever since I met him at Goodwood.

Also good to see every class winning car having an ex-F1 driver in their! (McNish, Verstappen, Brabham, Salo) and well done to Darren Turner, very unlucky in the BTCC but quality here.

  • Finally a challenger to Audi's stranglehold on Le Mans. Those Peugeot's were scintillating, it was close but no cigar.

Audi however move forward with eight straight wins. However most will be wondering when road car diesels can perform like these racers.

But a round of applause to the Aston Martin for yet another GT1 win. Seems they are back to winning ways at last.

  • Yes it was very exciting, but for me as a Dutchie, so was the win of the LMP2.

20 years ago Jan Lammers won with a white-purple Jaguar, now a full Dutch team wins in its class also in white-purple colourscheme.

But overall I do find it a bit confusing, LMP1 are open cars, closed cars, diesel powered and petrol powered and they all win. Why are there so many classes?

Oh well still loved the manly raw powered race. Can't wait till next year!
