First Ferrari: Andy Wilman

It was Guernsey, 1993.
I'd been sent by Top Gear magazine to write about the world's most frustrated petrolheads, because the island was stuffed with millionaire tax exiles who had garages stuffed with Lambos and 911s, but no way of enjoying them thanks to the blanket 35mph speed limit.
Their woe was my joy though, because I came across more than one jovial rich person who'd simply point at their unused supercar and say "Why don't you borrow it?", and consequently my Ferrari cherry went west as I slid behind the wheel of a stranger's Ferrari 400.
To be honest, it wasn't a memory I'll be dredging up on my deathbed. There I was in a crap two-door, on a crap road with a crap speed limit, pootling along thinking: "Yes, this isn't the life."
Ten minutes later I was dropping the keys through the man's letter box, too embarrassed to show my ingratitude.
Six months later, I drove a 355 in the hills above Maranello, and suddenly, it all made sense.
