It's good to be back

Richard_HammondEvery time we come back on the telly with a new series and stand there with our arms in the air shouting, 'We're back!', I worry that half the nation is wondering what we're on about.

So frequent are the repeats of TG across the legions of satellite channels beamed to your bloody toaster or whatever that I couldn't really blame people if they responded with: 'Well, you never bloody went away, did you?'

But the fact is, we do a series and then all bugger off and miss our mates.

Well, sort of. We miss the free cups of tea and the test track, anyway. So when we go back, it's like going back to school. I get that same feeling of half-dread and half-excitement, like at the end of the summer holidays.

I've got it more so this time because, to be perfectly honest, I can't remember doing the last series at all. I was told at the time that it was too soon after the 'crash we never talk about' to go back to work.

And I now think that it was. Can't remember anything about that series, not a moment. And so it feels like years since I've loafed about in the studio with my mates making schoolboy gags and horsing around.

Turns out my classmates are still the same irritating sods but we've got new desks and chairs on account of the fire. I prefer the new furniture, actually. Watching the show go out on Sunday night felt great, though - it's unbelievably good to be back doing what we do.

And it was also a chance to remind myself of just how brilliant that 911 GT3 RS really is. God, I miss that car. And those roads.

Still, there'll be plenty more arsing around in next week's Top Gear. And I can't wait.

  • It was good to have you back. I can't remember the last Sunday evening where I cried with laughter so consistently. I normally wail with disappointment cos the repeats are getting...well...repetitive! Although, your moment in the Zonda (the last time you did supercars together on the continent) still makes me snigger. Welcome back. See you next Sunday.

  • It is great to have the boys back on Sunday nights, and to watch all your antics. I am looking forward to reading Richard's autobiography and wish him well for the future and hope he remembers this series. As a Golf lover/owner I was very disappointed in the concept car - it was absolutely awful, thank goodness it is not going into production. Liked the 911 GT3 RS though, wouldn't mind having that parked outside my house but in a better colour! A big hello to James from Caerleon!

  • Hey Richard, Don't worry about not remembering the last series - it was great. And judging by last night this one will be too! It's great to have you guys back. I'm as green as that 911 GT3 with envy seeing you blasting through Europe's finest roads.

  • Thank goodness you boys are back, my Sunday night viewing is back to normal. It's like having my mates around for a few beers, a good old gab and a laugh. Liking the new furniture and yes James May does look too comfy in the old armchair. Looking forward to seeing what you three have been up to over the new series and seeing just how long the "hamsters" hair actually does get!

  • It's great to have you guys back on our screens - you've been missed! The repeats on satellite cannot beat watching a brand-new series kick off in style. Something TG has been able to do for years, and for many more to come I am sure. It was a fantastic show last night; you all looked so at home, back in your 'playground'. From personal experience mate, those memories from last series may come flooding back, just don't get your hopes up too much. I'm sorry you can't remember anything from Series 9, but I'm sure it makes this series so much more exciting and exhilarating. It's good to have you back, roll on next Sunday and the following 8 weeks! Great choice of car with the Porsche by the way!

  • Hey there, it's great to see you guys back again (especially welcome for those of us who only have poor-people's telly and can't watch re-runs on SKY!). I thought the show last night was great - breath-takingly gorgeous cars, in stunning settings, having their arses spanked soundly - how fabulous ;-)...O, I have missed you chaps! You never fail to bring excitement to the screen and innovative ways of entertaining your audience, plus real laugh-out-loud humour through it all. I don't know how guys you manage it each time, but if what I've seen so far is anything to go by, this series is going to be an absolute corker! God bless you all. Sorry to hear about the fire though - I have a spare telly you can have which is (marginally) better than the one you're currently lumped with, if you'd like?...no spare seats though

  • Loved the programme. I liked the best driving road film and I liked it when they all argued over which country they wanted to go to. But hey, IT'S BACK. Have been waiting for it for six months. Can't wait for next Sunday.

  • But what's going on with the hair, Richard? You look like a refugee from an Eighties New Romantic pop band. Are you thinking of branching out into a new career... such as a male model throwback to 1983?

  • Great to be back watching Top Gear. It makes Sundays worthwhile again. The show was great and the new chairs did look like Captain Slow had just lent them to you for filming. Only six days left till the next show. Keep up the good work.

  • It's great to have you all back on a Sunday night and for a decent 10 episode run this time; the last series was too short. I was lucky enough to come down and watch you film last week and it was a brilliant experience - you three have such an amazing chemistry between you. I am really looking forward to seeing what you have in store for the rest of the series.

  • Excellent show last night, although I'm not sure what was more disturbing, James naked in a plastic Aston, or the fact that Jezza now appears to have a better taste in jackets than Hamster. Come on Richard, you were the one who brought an air of modern sophistication to the proceedings (relatively speaking!).

  • Back to school?! Trust me, school nowadays is far less interesting (and believe me, I'm 15 and have to endure it all week).

Anyway, I'm especially pleased you're back because I don't have Sky, so I'm reduced to watching You Tube over and over again...
