We want your police cars. Now

Posted by Sam Philip at 4:00PM on Tuesday 11 March, 2008 7 Comments

Not a Suzuki JimnyWandering through a small French ski village last week, I was very nearly run over by one of the most absurd sights I've seen in a long time: a pair of burly gendarmes in a police-liveried Suzuki Jimny.

If ever you want to nullify a policeman's general air of importance and thinly veiled malice, put him in a midget white soft-roader.

Yes, I know that's a Russian police car rather than a Suzuki Jimny in the picture. Sadly, I didn't have a camera to hand. But you do. And here's the question.

Since you TopGear.com acolytes hail from all over the planet, what daft/ancient/hilarious police cars patrol your streets? We know about the Italian's Polizia's Lamborghini Gallardo, and the Met's Caparo T1. But we want sillier cars. Laughable cars.

We want you to take a photo of your local bobby's runabout. So long as it's interesting. No Focuses or BMW 5-Series. We want to know what the police drive in Eritrea. And Argentina. And Doncaster.

So email us with your own photos, and you might just end up in Top Gear magazine. Here's the rules. You've got to take the photo yourself - no nicking shots off the internet, or we'll come round your house and burn your socks. Preferably proper shots taken with a proper digital camera instead of grainy cameraphone images, but we'll do our best with whatever you send us.

If you could tell us what the car is too, that'd be a help: geeky as we are, it's going to be a fight to identify ancient Uzbeki police cars without a bit of help. And don't forget to tell us where you're from.

Oh, and most importantly, please don't get in trouble. We're guessing that police in some parts of the world are less-than-receptive to being photographed, so don't blame us if you end up spending a night in the cells.

So them's the rules. Email your finest police car shots to tgweb@bbc.co.uk with the subject line 'TG's Big Police Investigation'. Try to avoid getting arrested, if you can. We'd feel bad.

  • The South Australian police used to have at least one PT Cruiser done up in full kit. I think the idea was to make them more acceptable to our version of chavs, so it was a bit of a public relations thing.
