Block buster

A twin turbo'ed descendant of the Corvette V8It had blown up before I got there, of course.

I mean, you can't expect an engine producing 1,800bhp to run for hours without needing its guts scooping out and replacing regularly.

Still, I was disappointed not to see this special Mosler's engine alive for even a moment. By the time I got there, the monstrous black engine, a twin-turbo'ed descendant of the Corvette's V8, was sitting silently on the rig, a hole in its crankcase oozing expensive smelling oil and swarf into the drip tray.

"I told the owner an aluminum block wouldn't take that kind of power," said tuner Tom Nelson, reminding me the engine normally runs a more heavy duty cast iron set-up. "But he insisted so, as he's paying the bills, I tried."

It was important for the owner because he wants this Mosler to not just be another fast car, but THE fastest car in the US over the standing mile. The current record stands at around 220mph. The four-figure dyno charts for his car suggest that it won't stand for much longer.

I'll definitely be there when it tries for the record. And, if it doesn't blow up, I might even ask for a go. Never driven a car with more power than a Veyron, so I’ve no idea what to expect. All suggestions gratefully received.

  • I get that at some point I'm going to need to know where the defrost button is, or the traction control switch or whatever, but most of the time those lights are just a nuisance.

What happened to those dimmer switches we used to have that would dim everything in the cockpit? Leave that one light on, and let me dim the rest out of existence if need be!
