First pictures of the Vauxhall Adam

  1. Good news for supermini fans – Vauxhall’s just released the first pics of it’s new Adam, which looks a little bit a Smallish Runabouts: Gold album…

    As the internet has been discussing all morning, its roof arches are straight off the Audi A1, the floating C-pillar sections look like upside down versions of the Citroen DS3’s shark finny bit, the wheel arches and front lights have a strong whiff of Fiat 500 about them, and its rump reeks of Ford Ka. At 3.7 meters long and 1.7 meters wide, it’s bang on the supermini money too - that’s almost identical to a Mini hatch.

    There’s plenty of Vauxhall in there, though. That fold by the door handle is straight off the Astra GTC, the pinched in section on the sill is nicked off the Insignia and its chrome pencil moustache is from the facelifted Astra. No bad thing, because melted Cayenne lights aside, it looks rather compelling.

    The Adam’s diminutive engine line-up also follows suit; there are three different four-cylinder petrol engines with optional stop/start from launch - a 1.2-litre 70PS, plus two 1.4-litre engines with either 87PS or 100PS, all of which run through a five-speed manual ‘box. Sound a bit dull? Panic not: Vauxhall promises the Adam’ll be the first to get its all-new direct injection forced induction engine once it’s been signed off.

    Inside, there’s a profusion of stuff marketers want us to describe as funky – changeable nuclear-bright inserts for the dashboard panel *cough* Fiat 500 *cough* surround a seven-inch touchscreen interface that’ll sync with your iPhone or Android (and access internet-downloaded apps like the new Renault Clio’s) and sit underneath a starlight headlining *cough*Rolls-Royce Phantom *cough*…

    Outside, you can choose between 16, 17 and 18-inch rims – spec 17s or 18s and Vauxhall chucks in the lowered sports chassis and thousands of combinations of two-tone exterior colour.

    But that name. That awful, awful name…  We blame the Germans. Mostly because it’s their fault; Opel (Vauxhall’s sister brand) named the car after company founder Adam Opel, which you’ll find yourself explaining to the entire world when you tell people you’ve bought one.

    We’ll have to wait till its official debut at the Paris motor show in September for more information, but in the meantime answer us this:
