The Top Gear Christmas Special won’t be on this Christmas - we’re saving it for 2013. But allow us to rescue you from inconsolable panic, for there is a silver lining to this bleak, miserable cloud. BBC Two is kicking off a new series called Racing Legends, and it has many, many cars – and the loons that drove them properly – in it.

The show follows three high profile car enthusiasts as they re-trace the steps of Great British racing legends, learning as much as they can about them by interviewing their chums from the race-o-sphere, studying some superb archive footage, and spending plenty of time up close and personal with their wheels.

But their ultimate mission is to emulate the legend by re-enacting one of their greatest ever races, in a rare classic car. They even get the original team of mechanics and the racetracks re-opened, which sounds more than a little bit smashing.

It kicks of on Thursday December 27 at 8:00pm, and you get to see the Captain of USS Enterprise test his head’s impressive drag coefficient. Patrick Stewart’s the show’s inaugural star, telling the story of Stirling Moss’ career (remember when we interviewed him?). The pair travel to Florence in a classic Mercedes to re-trace the route of Italy’s Mille Miglia discussing how Stirling’s near fatal crash may have been the best thing that ever happened to him.

How Sir Patrick gets on with a 1957 Formula 1 car at the scene of Stirling’s historic British Grand Prix victory, remains to be seen, but we’ll be watching to find out.
