Americans! Top Gear USA returns with a brand news series this Tuesday on History
Americans! It’s been five months since your favourite loud mouth, car dork and wheelman have graced screens with a new show. The dry spell is over: The first of this season’s 16 episodes comes your way this Tuesday, August 14 at 9/8C.
The season kicks off by exploring the only thing that can slow them down, other than frame-bending jumps or a rock wall: law enforcement. You’ll get an hour of blues, twos, bullets, burnouts and at least one reference to donut eating.
Tanner, Rutledge and Adam head to Detroit to find the best new police car in the country. The Ford Crown Victoria, which until recently made up 70% of the country’s police fleet, went out of production in 2011 and competing automakers taste blood in the water. Around 100,000 vehicles are sold to law enforcement agencies per year, and Ford, Dodge and Chevrolet all want that business. Tanner straps into the Ford Police Interceptor, Rutledge the Chevy Caprice PPV and Adam the Dodge Charger Pursuit.
First things first: The Crown Vic deserves a proper send-off, involving proper use of rear-wheel drive, rugged body-on frame construction and a guest appearance by a law breaker suited in white.
Ford’s Michigan Proving Grounds provide the venue for a 0-100-0 drag race and braking test– which doesn’t take very long, as all three cars are bonafide rockets. Remember how you could smoke a Crown Vic-driving cop in your Toyota Camry? Now you’ll need a Porsche 911.
Agents at a nearby police tactical training center assists in testing build quality by zipping the cars into an inflatable car condom– only the cruisers’ door seals stand between the hosts’ mucous membranes and riot-grade tear gas.
As we all know from watching TV and movies, law enforcement frequently needs to fire semi-automatic assault weapons from cruisers being driven at high speeds. What better way to test ride quality than have a sharpshooter try to take down targets from the passenger seat while the cruisers tackle a handling course?
The winner of this cruiser on cruiser on cruiser contest gets quite a prize: To opportunity to race the fastest cop car in America against the ultimate getaway vehicle. Haze and seriously illegal velocities result when a 505 horsepower, 198 mph Corvette Z06 goes up against a modified Triumph Speed Triple motorcycle in a race over the docks and bridges of the busiest port in the country.
Tune in, American fans of the American Top Gear– it’s on History this Tuesday at 9/8 central, and we have a great run of episodes in store for you.
