When hobbies turn into something scary

Nick Heyward's jet-engined invalid carriage has a top speed of almost 50mph. Yes, really

You look a little too young to be drawing your pension, so what's with the invalid carriage?
I've put a jet engine on the back.

I see. And why did you do that?
Because I've always got a thrill from making things go faster.

But why an invalid carriage?
I'd used the electric motor from it on another project, so this thing was just lying around. One day it was mentioned that it'd be funny to put a jet on it, but the more I thought about it, the more I had to do it.

'The jet itself is a turbo from a diesel engine and the other bits are old car parts'

You haven't been rifling through Rolls-Royce's bins have you?
No, no - it's all completely homemade. The jet itself is a turbo from a diesel engine and the other bits are old car parts.

Right. Tell me how you start it
We use a garden leaf blower to start spinning the turbo before we dump a load of parafin down the afterburner and ignite it with a spark from a spark plug.

Did you say afterburner?
Yes, it's the pipe on the back that reuses the hot emission gases by injecting more fuel for extra power.

And this actually works?
With a bang. I then have a fuel pressure regulator to burn more fuel, which increases the power, and then a button which I use for controlling the afterburner.
