Surrealist sculpter Anthony Wilson is the Salvador Dali of the English garden. Perhaps
Anthony, call the police - somebody's been fly tipping scrap metal in your garden.
Erm, those are my sculptures.
Sorry, sculptures?
Yes, I create sculptures from stainless steel, copper and any other metal that keeps its colour.
But it's all made out of scrap.
Recycled junk has been a medium for surrealism ever since Picasso used an old bicycle seat for a sculpture of a bull's head.
So how long have you been creating this metallic art?
As a hobby for quite a while, but as a business for the past three years.
'I like making space invaders, science fiction creatures and anything from ancient mythology'
Did you say 'business'?
Yes, I mostly charge around £1,000 per commission.
I see. What's that over there?
That one's a monster.
Okaaay, and why a monster?
I like making space invaders, science fiction creatures and anything from ancient and modern mythology. I live in Wiltshire, which for many is UFO country - from the Sixties there have been many mysterious sightings around Cley Hill [a prominent local landmark].
They are all rather large.
Well, I figured that anyone can do small, so I make mine big, often using the trees and shrubs -as part of the installation. I have also transformed one side of a conventional yew hedge into a dragon and the other into a giant teddy bear lying on his back.
