TransAm non-stop: leg three

26h 09m
20 miles outside Amarillo (ten minutes in time I reckon - I forget to check the watches) and the XKR has just bloody gone. I've been averaging 120mph and still can't see them, so decide to wind things up when faced with a long, straight road.

The S-Type tops out at an indicated 164mph, which we hold briefly, before realising that Pat has got his ass seriously in the chair. He's gone. And gone from a car chasing him at 160mph.

We soon realise why. Because the roads are so long and straight, and because of the lack of other street lighting, you can see an awfully long way. And I can see red and blue lights. MH gets the video camera out and we start to worry. We giggle slightly - we realise just how fast we were travelling - and therefore how fast Pat must have been going. It's kind of funny.

Until the second cop car passes us on the left. Oh shit.

When the third car races past us on a dirt road on the right, we realise there's been a pursuit called. Pat and Alex are in the deepest shit. MH comes up with the classic line 'I have a funny feeling in my tummy...' I decide MH won't make it far in Folsom.

Yep, it's Pat. We decide to get the hell out of here. So we run. Sorry Pat.

Roadworks. The longest set so far - and we did them TWICE turning around to go and find the XKR!

'No phone signal. MH and I become convinced that the car has been taken, that Pat in is jail'

26h 47m
No phone signal. MH and I become convinced that the car has been taken, that Pat in is jail. We hatch plans to attach a chain to the bars of their cell like in westerns.

We park up to decide what to do, and as we stand by the car, I hear it self-lock with the keys in it. We're in the middle of nowhere, the other car is in police custody, we have no phone signal and we're IN AMERICA. Michael starts casting around for a large enough rock.

On the third sweep, I found the key. In my pocket. Duh.

27h 04m
Now back in Amarillo to see if we can get some signal and therefore some idea of the fate of the XK. Eventually we end up sitting in a deserted gas station for twenty minutes trying to reach either of the guys. It's not looking good. We discuss getting a room and trying to work out what to do with two jail-bound Brits.
