TransAm non-stop: final leg

32h 36m
Just seen a bloke cycling along. In the desert. At night.

32h 47m
The motorcyclists don't wear helmets - which seems bloody stupid. The bloke we just passed had a forehead like shoe leather.

Manage to catch the XKR with some judicious speeding. Haven't been busted again, though.

With a few hundred miles to go it feels like we've almost finished!

33h 13m
But we haven't really. There are still another few hours to go.

33h 36m
We've taken to the back roads to avoid traffic and cops and hopefully knock some time off the totals. We're heading for a 36-hour run if we drive like maniacs.

Lovely long sweeping roads out here. But the S-Type lights are genuinely shocking - the XKR has disappeared with MH and Pat in it. We decide to aim to meet at Ruby's - the diner on Redondo Beach.

34h 07m
We've just seen signs for LA! Which has made us really excited.

'We're in the car park dancing around. The time is pretty damn respectable - 36 hours and 34 minutes'

34h 12m
Just realised that the XKR has just passed us on the freeway going mental. MH at the wheel - they had to stop for fuel - at our more relaxed pace we're still ok. And according to our phone calls to Pat and MH there's still two hours to go.

LA is simply enormous - we've still got loads of driving to do. And it's evening rush hour on the freeway.

34h 41m
Lost the XKR - we ring to say that we'll try and meet them at Ruby's. MH is apparently really going for it. Bit between the teeth and all that. Pat sounds a bit scared.

36h 34m
WE HAVE ARRIVED! Ruby's is shut. We're in the car park dancing around. The time is pretty damn respectable - 36 hours and 34 minutes. We're all knackered. But we've not disgraced ourselves. Full respect to the guys that did in 33 hours...

36h 39m
Stopped dancing. Decided to post an update instead - thank God the laptop is playing ball, but I'm too knackered to speak, let alone type. It's over to Michael now - on the next page - for some post-race analysis...
