Q&A with Mr T

The A-Team legend and former bodyguard talks nuts with Top Gear. That's wheel nuts, fool!

Where do cars rank on your personal scale of all things good?
Cars come in at about 11 or 12; they're not top of my priority. There are much more important things in life, like family, children and God.

Can you tell us how you make donuts?
Ooh, donuts. I'd get some dough, beat it in my hands and then drop it in some hot grease for 15-20 minutes, and then I'd eat them.

You've got all weekend to drive from London to the South of France; what's the car and who's in the passenger seat... and what's on the stereo?
It would be a tank. I'd be with my 21-year-old son and Ain't No Stopping Us Now would be playing on the stereo.

When was the last time you knowingly broke the law in a car?
Ooh, that would be 30 years ago, and I knew I was doing wrong; I'd never behave like that now. Must have been 78 or 79 and I was just driving recklessly, not good!

Can you tell the difference between the smell of a frying clutch and the smell of burning rubber?
Yes, a clutch would smell weird, whereas rubber is a lot more distinctive.

What's the fastest you've ever driven?
It was in a Rolls-Royce, my Rolls-Royce back in 1986. I was driving at 130mph in Las Vegas.

'I was with my buddy and he was driving too fast, and we hit a tree. He ain't Mr T's buddy any more!'

What's your earliest memory of a car?
I was four years old and with my father. I was sat in the back seat just looking out the window.

When and where were you happiest in a car?
Then (above). I used to love spending time with my father when I was a young boy. We'd go out for drives on the long road all the time.

What one gadget would make life behind the wheel easier for you?
I wouldn't have any mod cons. I'm not into all this satnav nonsense! I'd just like it to be normal; I'm a bit old fashioned like that. As long as I've got my horn, the breaks and a mirror, I'd be happy. That's how it should be. I wouldn't have a phone, either. Take advice from Mr T: you shouldn't have any distractions when you're driving - you need to be able to keep your eyes on the road.

How much is a gallon of gas?
$4.25.

Who or what caused your worst car crash?
That was a long time ago. I was with my buddy and he was driving too fast, and we hit a tree. He ain't Mr T's buddy any more!
