Q&A with Gaz Coombes

The Supergrass singer rocks TG.com's world with his motoring wisdom and tales of car chases

Where do cars rank on your personal scale of all things good?
Don't know really. I'd say about 5 out of 10. I could maybe live without one. Obviously they would come after my family and music, but I've always loved cars. I've loved them, bought more, and then felt guilty that I've bought more.

Can you tell us how you make donuts?
No. But I can tell you how to make classic American cookies (goes into whole recipe, ingredients, oven temperatures, cooking times).

You've got all weekend to drive from London to the South of France; what's the car, who's in the passenger seat, and what's on the stereo?
Well, I'd be in my '72 BMW, with my good lady and my daughter. What would we be playing? It would have to be Station to Station by David Bowie on rotation.

Can you tell the difference between the smell of a frying clutch and the smell of burning rubber?
I'd like to think so. I don't think I've ever had a frying clutch, but I can constantly smell burning rubber because I drive fairly rubbish.

What's the fastest you've ever driven?
I'd say in France. I'm not like a boy racer, but everyone's had those moments when the roads in France let you open it up a bit. The motorway was quite mellow and empty and then I looked down and realised I was doing 120mph, but I didn't do it for long.

'A pair of mechanical arms should come out of the seat and massage the driver's neck and shoulders'

What's your earliest memory of a car?
It has to be either my Dad's Rover 3500, loved that car, or a Saab 900. I think the Rover sticks in the memory, though, as it was a blast of a car. It looked the state of the art in its day with its interior and everything.

When and where were you happiest in a car?
Well, before my daughter was born, my wife and I went to the States, hired a cheap old Mustang and drove it along the West Coast around places like Big Sur and Santa Cruz. That was a really nice time.

What one gadget would make life behind the wheel easier for you?
I think the driver needs to be relaxed when they're driving, so I'd say a pair of mechanical arms which come out of the seat and massage the neck and shoulders.

How much is a litre of fuel
I don't know. I've never really looked. I'm going have to ask; how much is it?

Who or what caused your worst car crash?
Well, thankfully I've never had a car crash touch-wood, but I was in a pretty dicey situation where I was in a car chase once. Me and Danny Goffey (Supergrass' drummer and former TG presenter Chris Goffey's son.) were having a smoke once when we were 17 in a car and this car came up behind us and flashed its lights. We started to pull off and it began to follow us, so it suddenly turned into a chase. We got out of it as Danny was able to turn into an empty garage and turn his lights off, and the other car just went right by. It was like something out of a movie scene.
