Frankfurt show: Peugeot 308 RC Z Coupe Concept

'A car that divides opinion' tends to be a euphemism for 'no one really likes it', but in the case of the 308 RC, it's actually true. Half the Top Gear office thinks it's a handsome brute, the other half can't stand it.

We've been looking at the coupe concept revolving slowly on the Peugeot stand for a good 15 minutes, because we still can't decide whether it's quirkily good-looking or just a bit wrong.

The RC Z is a 2+2 coupe based on the same running gear as the new 308, and although it's a concept at this stage, it seems highly likely to enter production in the near future.

The nose has been borrowed near-wholesale from the 308 hatch, but from the flared 'arches back things are distinctly original. That curved rear windscreen - which one TG staffer described as 'reminiscent of a pair of buttocks' - is fashioned from polycarbonate (it wasn't possible to make glass that shape) and helps to reduce drag.

We reckon there's a bit of Karmann Ghia (blast from the past for you, there) in the oversized rear arches, and is there just a hint of Bentley in those rear lights? Maybe not.

Whatever you think of the looks, the RC Z should be a reasonably practical coupe. The 'occasional' rear seats fold down to provide enough space to fit a mountain bike, and it sounds pretty sensible in the engine department too, being powered by the 1.6-litre THP engine from the 207 RC.

It's a touch more potent than the 207 RC, though, with power up 43bhp to 218bhp overall. That's good for a 0-62mph time of around seven seconds, but consumption is reasonable at 42.4mpg.

We'd expect to see the 308 RC Z in production - though perhaps without the buttock-windscreen - in the not-too-distant. By which time we might have made up our minds on the looks.
