Dakar cancelled

The BBC has just got hold of a news report from France claiming that the 2008 Dakar rally has been cancelled.

The rally was due to kick off in Lisbon tomorrow and finish in Dakar on the 20th January, but safety fears emerged after four French tourists were murdered in Mauritania on Christmas Eve and the French government urged travellers to avoid the country.

Nine stages of the Dakar rally were due to pass through the North African country.
