Perfect Bay

Troy Bayliss has won both World Superbike races at the Philip Island track in Australia, just a week after he gave the Ducati 1098 its debut victory in the championship.

In Race 1, Bayliss leapt into an early lead from the start while Ducati team-mate Fabrizio stalled on the grid.

Kawasaki rider Ianuzzo broke his wrist as he thumped into the rear of Fabrizio, while the Ducati rider had his boot ripped clean off. Fabrizio suffered cuts to his leg, but he managed to get on his spare bike for the inevitable restart.

Max Biaggi was looking good for a battle with Bayliss in the restarted Race 1. The Italian charged from 16th to second and was catching Troy when he crashed. Biaggi's fall left Corser to take second and Fabrizio a brave third.

In Race 2, Corser's Yamaha led the first four laps (after a jump start) before crashing out. This left Bayliss in the lead, with Spaniards Nieto, Xaus and Checa battling for second.

Biaggi had joined this battle - once again charging up from 16th on the grid - only to crash again in a huge accident at the 130mph Turn One. Biaggi broke his wrist in the fall but is expected to race at the next round in Valencia in a month.

Former MotoGP star Carlos Checa finished second in Race 2 on the Honda, with Fonsi Nieto finishing third.

But the day was all about Bayliss. On his last visit to Philip Island before retirement and a few days short of his 39th birthday, the Aussie showed that he is the best World Superbike rider in the world. It was an exceptional piece of riding.

WSBK Riders points after two rounds:
1. Bayliss 88
2. Nieto 61
3. Xaus 59
4. Corser 45
5. Checa 45
6. Neukirchner 39
