'Roc at the 'Ring

Volkswagen has confirmed its drivers for the 24 hour race at the Nürburgring. You may have heard of them...

Two-time Le Mans winner Hans-Joachim Stuck and double World Rally Champion Carlos Sainz will drive one of three factory-developed racing versions of the new Scirocco. The car will make its debut on the track before its official launch as a road car. Brave.

"The new Scirocco's entry in what is arguably the world's toughest car race is a demanding as well as an exciting project," said Dr Ulrich Hackenberg, VW's head of vehicle development.

"The objective should be for one of the three Scirocco teams to repeat the 2007 class victory of the Golf GTI."

Sainz, the 2007 FIA Cross-Country Rally World Cup winner with VW, has never competed in a 24 hour race, while Stuck is a bit handy at the 'Ring - he's won the 24 hour race outright three times...

The race kicks off on May 24, 2008.
