Gumpert's Green Hell

As if next month's Nürburgring 24 hour race wasn't looking juicy enough with a Lexus LF-A and three VW Sciroccos already set to compete, German manufacturer Gumpert has announced that it will run a hybrid version of its Apollo supercar at the Green Hell.

The hybrid Apollo - which will be painted green to highlight its eco-credentials - is powered by a 3.3-litre V8 mated to a 134bhp electric motor, and will produce some 630bhp when the two run in tandem.

The electric motor will recharge using energy recovered from braking - a forerunner to the hybrid systems set to enter Formula One in 2009.

The racing Apollo will be piloted by former F1 driver Heinz-Harald Frentzen and ex-Nürburgring winner Dirk Muller.

If you fancy watching the Gumpert duke it out with Porsche 911 GT3s, Lamborghini Gallardos, Dodge Vipers and the rest over the weekend of the May 24/25, get planning that road trip now.
