Volvo V50 gains new diesel engine

The Volvo V50 is set to gain a potent new 180bhp turbodiesel engine.

The five-cylinder unit has 258lb ft of torque to help it move from rest to 62mph in 8.8 seconds when attached to Volvo's Geartronic automatic gearbox.

A manual gearbox-equipped version will follow in 2007.

Volvo has fitted a particulate filter to reduce soot emissions from the exhaust, while the Swedish firm says carbon dioxide emissions are very low to attract company drivers.

The 180bhp five-cylinder turbodiesel V50 arrives in the UK in June, and the engine will also be used in the new C70 convertible.
