Fiat has done a Hummer with the Oltre concept 4x4.
Described by Fiat as 'exuberant', the design takes a no-frills approach to the large SUV segment.
The car's purposefulness can be seen in details such as door handles that are recessed into the bodywork, so as not hinder off-road ability in tight spots.
A rugged four-wheel-drive system incorporates a centre differential that can be locked along with the front and rear axles' differentials to give mountain goat off-road ability.
Power comes from a four-cylinder turbodiesel with 185bhp and 336lb ft of torque driving through a six-speed gearbox.
The performance is geared very much to off-road ability, and top speed is only 81mph.
The body is constructed around a tubular cell, which doubles as roll-over protection.
Weighing in at seven tonnes, the Oltre can carry up to five people and three tonnes of cargo.
The Oltre may be a concept at the moment, but it's based on the Iveco Light Multirole Vehicle, which is due to replace the British Army's Land Rovers, so we may yet see a civilian version to frighten Range Rovers.
