Dodge to build new Challenger

Let's hear a big cheer for Chrysler.

The American firm has confirmed it will build the Dodge Challenger coupe, which was first shown at the Detroit motor show earlier this year.

A modified and shortened version of the Chrysler 300C's chassis will underpin the Challenger.

Power is set to come from a 6.1-litre V8 engine with 425bhp, driving though a six-speed manual gearbox.

Dodge says the concept is capable of 0-60mph in 4.5 seconds and 174mph, so the production car should live up to its muscle car image.

There's no definite on-sale date, but expect to see the first Dodge Challengers on the road towards the end of 2007.
