Porsche 904: cancel that Carrera GT
With any guilty fantasy of Porsche ownership comes the realisation that you may just find yourself transmogrifying into the self-same smug 911 driver that you resisted the urge to let out of a side turning just a couple of weeks previously.
Things were different back in '64, glory time for the undeniably lovely 904 GTS. This mid-engined GT had skimpy yet utterly sultry glass-fibre bodywork bonded direct to its steel chassis, winning Italy's epic Targa Florio road race on its first try.
The 904 was pushed along by hugely complex flat-four, flat-six, then flat-eight engines, evolving from 904 GTS to 904/6, 904/8 and finally 906. Expect no harm to be risked to your self-image in any one of them. This was the most extreme Porsche race car of its day, but it's also a disarmingly subtle charmer.
