At the outer edge of the Audi A4 universe exists the DTM race car, a 460bhp, 200mph carbon-fibre bodied monster that won the German Touring Car Championship last year.
Next down is the 414bhp RS4, followed by the S4 and then, some way off in the distance, by this A4 DTM Edition.
The DTM Edition makes do with approximately half the racer's V8. Fitted here is a two-litre four-cylinder FSI engine, with the boost cranked up on its turbocharger to give a 20bhp advantage over the existing A4 2.0T.
Wait for the initial lag to drop off and a hurried whoosh of forward motion sets in, sadly unaccompanied by the sound effects of the true DTM.
Underneath you'll find unique springs and dampers matched to lowered suspension, giving a still supple ride and reassuring balance through corners. Quattro four-wheel drive is also a standard fit.
Some great looking part-leather, part-suede-effect Recaro seats appear inside, plus slabs of carbon-fibre trim.
The theme continues outside, with strips of carbon-fibre now sprouting from chin spoiler and boot. Enlarged tailpipes and 18-inch alloys complete the act.
A total of 250 DTM Editions are coming to the UK, for which the one big hitch is the price. At £29,980, this car nudges £5,000 more than a closely specced A4 2.0T. But it's still £20,000 less than an RS4.
