As icons go, the BMW 320i isn't the most obvious candidate. Yet it's this model (now 30 years old) that has been the cornerstone of the BMW we know today - the first to become synonymous with the German's firm's high standards of build quality and a driving experience that is high on pleasure.
So it'll come as no surprise that this fifth generation (E90) 320i keeps up the family honour. With 150bhp from the 1995cc petrol four-cylinder and a 0-60mph time of 9.0secs, there's enough power for normal get-you-to-work-and-back driving, although it can run out of puff if driven with more vigour. But it's the perfectly set-up handling that makes this iteration a worthy 3-Series. It really is nicely balanced, and feels supremely settled if you pitch it hard into a corner.
So, despite bigger-engined petrol versions rolling out over the coming months, don't be disappointed if your company won't pay the premium for the more powerful 320d and you have to settle for a 320i. It is an icon after all.
