Yes, Bentley may now be owned by the Germans, but there is still something uniquely British about these wonderful machines. They weren't designed on a computer, but sketched by hand. They aren't made on a factory production line, but hand-crafted in a workshop.
These are not efficient vehicles. They are, however, machines of power and glory.
The Arnage's 6.75-litre V8 turbocharged engine produces 400bhp and a staggering 619lbft of torque. The response is superb; just brush the throttle and it truly rockets forward, hitting 60mph in just 5.9 seconds.
The noise is thunderous and not what one would expect from such a regal-looking conveyance. And should sir find that insufficient, the Arnage T will add a further 50bhp to the mix.
Arnages can also be had in longer wheelbase Limousine spec, for more luxurious space for rear passengers. But Bentleys are cars for drivers, not just chauffeurs, and the handling might come as a bit of a surprise.
For something so large, the Arnage is incredibly nimble and sure-footed. With precise and direct steering, the corners are there to be enjoyed.
The automatic transmission provides a completely seamless gearchange and an instant response to a deftly applied right brogue. Happily, the tidy handling does not come at a cost, for the Arnage also does an exemplary job of cosseting its occupants.
