A spaceship that rides on air. Possibly one of the finest oddities that Citroen has ever produced
Our verdict
The Citroen C6 is a lovely large saloon-cum-limo with truly outlandish styling and an eerie ride quality that floats rather than rolls.
Comfort
This is what the C6 is all about - sitting back and letting the road float away underneath you. It might not have the magic-carpet ride that many say - it still picks up lots of small irregularities - but this is a car that's a joy to mile-munch in. Trans-continental? No worries, the C6 and its huge 2.9-metre wheelbase laps it up.
Performance
The C6 comes with either a 215bhp 3.0-litre petrol V6, a 208bhp 2.7-litre V6 diesel or a 2.2-litre, 173bhp diesel four. The big petrol motivates this big car from rest to 62mph in 9.4 seconds and on to 143mph, the smaller diesel takes 9.5 to 62 and gets to 135mph. The V6 diesel is the best of the bunch though; 0-62mph in 8.9 seconds and a 143mph top speed make it on par with either of the other two and in-gear torque is miles better.
Cool
Wildly cool if you have the right attitude to it. Never fails to make an impression.
Quality
Electrics can be an issue, but generally the C6 looks to be well made and just quirky enough to be fun. The interior is a bit grey if you option incorrectly.
Handling
You can hustle a C6, but it feels disconnected at an atomic level even in ‘Sport‘ mode. The steering is way, way too light for a front-drive saloon and even though there is grip to be had you never feel comfortable making it pick up its skirts.
Practicality
The boot is pretty big at 488litres, but it's the space inside that really makes the C6. Room in the back is palatial - as befits its semi-limo feel - and even the rear seats are electric. As family transport it's ideal.
Running costs
The expensive V6 cars are Group 18 insurance and company car drivers get hammered if they choose the petrol (25.2mpg is pretty bad). Go for a diesel and you'll be making an odd but individual choice.
