What to look for
Mechanically, the old Vauxhall Corsa
is sound. What you need to
be wary of are tired, ex-hire
cars. Also, be choosy over
the trim. Excluding the hot
versions, the final trim
levels were down to just
three (Expression, Life and
Design), which are all nicely
specified. But be wary of
basic models Vauxhall
was knocking out previously.
Used Prices
With the used market
flooded with old Corsas
the little Vauxhall is a very
cheap secondhand car. A
1.2 Design for example,
under 12 months old with
aircon and just a few
thousand miles, is worth
under £6,000. And if you're
willing to put up with some
awful colours then you can
save yourself about £300.
Our Choice
The tiny three-cylinder 1.0-
litre is hard work, and any
engine problems can cost
thousands to put right. So
the best small Corsa has to
be the 1.2 - it has enough
power so you won't be
embarrassed on the
motorway and it loves the
city. We'd also recommend
the 1.7 DTi diesel which,
with 100bhp and a huge
177lb ft of torque, is a
great car for overtaking on
the motorway, and full of
vim and vigour in the city.
But get hold of any Corsa
with a decent-sized engine
and you'll be better off.
