Volkswagen Passat

Aim for a post-2001 model and the VW Volkswagen Passat is a decent used choice. Watch out for the high-milers

What to look for
The old-style VW Volkswagen Passat is still a fine, sturdy car. Choose a post-2001 facelift model since it will have a better exterior and interior, and a better line-up of engines. High mileage models aren't a problem due to car's robustness but as ever, insist on a full service history.

Used prices
For the real bargains you should go a bit older - a three-year-old 1.9 TDi 130bhp Sport will be around £9,500. More of the newer models are coming into the trade, so prices are now dropping. Twelve-month examples have already depreciated by 20 per cent.
