Review: Audi A6 2.0 TFSI

The introduction of the updated E-Class in the market did create quite a buzz and it even found quite a few buyers in a short period. And that seems to have got Audi thinking about the A6. Just about five months back, Audi introduced a Special Edition of the A6. The Special Edition shared the exact same mechanicals as the regular A6, but packed in a few extra features that’d make your life merrier, especially when you’re seated in the backseat. That Special Edition was offered only in two versions – 2.0 TDI and the 3.0 TDI. But now, there’s a new one in Audi’s stable – A6 2.0 TFSI.
And as the name suggests, it’s a turbo-petrol block – the same one that you find in the Q3 – just that, its eight-speed auto transmission sends the power only to the front wheels, unlike the Q3’s all-wheel drive.
With the term ‘turbo-petrol’, you might imagine it to be a little lethargic initially, but this engine shows none of those signs. It is punchy right from the word go, and piles up revs nicely, putting out 180bhp and 320Nm of torque in a nice and linear manner.
The engine is mated to a transmission that Audi calls ‘multitronic’. It’s a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) with eight predefined ratios. The gearbox hesitates a bit initially, but chains and the pulleys change the ratios seamlessly – typical of a CVT. The initial hesitation is shown in the not-so-quick acceleration figure. The 2.0 TFSI with the CVT, hits 100kph from standstill in 9.21 seconds, which isn’t too fast. But having a CVT pays dividends on the fuel economy front. It goes a good 8.6km in the city and 11.4km on the highway on a litre of petrol. Almost a kpl more than Merc’s E200 CGI.
The A6 was never meant to be a great handling car, but more of a comfortable sedan to ferry you in luxury. But having said that, the A6 is not a bad handler at all. Yes, there’s a fair bit of body roll involved around corners, but it won’t get out of shape very easily. It doesn’t feel as if you’re telling it to do something it doesn’t want to, even if you’re a bit aggressive while taking corners. It does tend to understeer given that there’s no quattro system involved here, but it’s not alarming. The steering isn’t too communicative; it weighs up in Sport mode but feedback isn’t as much as you want. And the ride is on the softer side that soaks up the potholes well to unsure they don’t hit your spine hard.
More often than not, if you’re thinking of getting the A6, you don’t bother driving yourself. So what will matter to you the most is the comfort at the rear. And the A6 will not disappoint you in any way. There’s enough legroom to stretch your legs and if you need some more room, all you need to do is press a switch on the door that pushes the front passenger seat ahead to make more room. There’s a MMI system to solve all your entertainment needs. The cabin is laid out well and the quality of materials used is grade A.
If you don’t clock in heaps of kilometres or are not bothered much about the petrol bills, the 2.0 TFSI makes for a great bet. It’s comfortable, the ride is good and the CVT has an edge over its rivals in terms of fuel efficiency. And at Rs 41.91 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi), it won’t even dig a deep hole in your pocket.

The peppy petrol motor is fun to drive but the CVT isn’t the quickest in the game. It makes for a good proposition if you’re looking for a petrol luxury sedan.
