Harley-Davidson ushers in the Street 500 & 750
The little new Harleys rumble into the ring at EICMA. Just as we predicted in our October issue...
We'd given you the low-down on the much-awaited small-capacity Harleys in our 8th Anniversary issue, and today, Harley's revealed the Street 500 & 750 at EICMA 2013.
Unlike what we'd said, the Street motorcycles are based on an all-new platform, and like we'd said, are powered by new, liquid-cooled (that's right, liquid-cooled) 'Revolution X' V-twin engines. The 500's is a 494cc unit, while the 750 gets a 749cc mill, both mated to a six-speed manual transmission. Harley hasn't mentioned power figures yet, but then, it usually never does.
What's important is how compact these new Harleys are - based on H-D first all-new platform in 13 years (the first since Microsoft launched Windows 2000, to put it into perspective), the Street 500 & 750 are smaller than your traditional Harleys, weigh 217kg with fuel, and are low-slung too. And since these feature minimalistic 'Dark Custom' styling, Harley will offer plenty of personalisation options, so that your Street stands out among the Streets on the streets. Perplexed?
In the USA, the Street range will start at $6,700 (Rs 4.13 lakh) for the 500, and go up to $7,500 (Rs 4.62 lakh) for the 750. Harley has confirmed that the Street will hit our shores mid-2014 (time to gloat a little more), and we expect to see the bikes at the upcoming 2014 Auto Expo.
Harley says that the Street sounds like an authentic H-D. Listen to it in the video below, decide for yourself and then tell us - do you like the baby Harley?
