Ian King wins the European Dragracing Championship 2012
Team Gulf Oil veteran secures a record-breaking 6th title in 11 years at the Santa Pod Raceway
Drag racing, as we know, is not for the faint-hearted. Riding a top-fuel bike isn't child's play, winning races with one is even tougher. And securing the drag racing championship not just once, but six times over a period of 11 years is quite something. Team Gulf Oil Grand Prix Originals' rider Ian King has managed to do just that with his most recent victory at Santa Pod Raceway, UK in the final round of the European Dragracing Championship 2012.
King held a lead, albeit very slim, at the top of the championship points table right from the start of the season, but come the final round, a horde of riders were vying for the Championship. However, King qualified in second place in the second elimination round after an electronic malfunction had thrown him off-track in the first round to make it to the final against Qualifier No.1, Swedish record-holder Peter Svensson.
Greeted by the sight of over 30,000 people who had come to watch the final, the pressure eventually got to Svensson. Launching off the start line 0.2 seconds before the green light, the Swedish veteran threw away whatever little chance he had of securing victory, given that King was faster than him to the quarter-mile anyway.
After the race, King said, "Our consistency and reliability were key, we won three of the five counting events, and finished runner up in another with the first round loss in Sweden a few weeks ago the only real negative. With some smart tuning and tactical riding at critical moments the team’s efforts were duly rewarded in maintaining our position on top of the table throughout the season".
