Launched: Kawasaki Z800
After the mean-looking Z1000, Kawasaki launches the middleweight Z800 in India
Kawasaki's been on a roll of late in India. It launched the ZX-14R and the ZX-10R barely five months ago, and also introduced the Ninja 1000, and the Sugomi design theme-inspired Z1000 towards the end of 2013. Now, in barely a month's time, Kawasaki has brought in its second 'Z' bike - the Z800.
It's a muscle-laden roadster, the Z800, a bike that follows the bigger Z1000's beefy appearance. Sugomi design is at work here too, and while it's not as effective as it is on the 1000, it does look pretty mean.
The Z800 is powered by an 806cc, liquid-cooled, inline-four engine that makes 111.3bhp and 83Nm of torque, all of which is channeled to the rear wheel via a six-speed manual gearbox. Kawasaki claims that the Z800's engine has been tuned for better low-to-mid range performance to aid everyday riding.
Kawasaki also says that the use of a cast aluminium engine sub-frame helps reduce vibrations at the handlebar, and that the main body frame is slimmer and more rigid. Which sounds fine, till the time you notice how much the Z800 weighs - at 231kg, it weighs a full 10 kilos more than even the Z1000.
Stopping power is provided by a twin-petal disc setup at the front, and a single petal disc at the back. ABS comes standard.
The Z800 will be shipped over as a completely-built unit from Thailand, and has been priced at Rs 7.90 lakh if you're buying it in Pune, and Rs 8.05 lakh if you buy it in Delhi. Both prices are ex-showroom.
Kawasaki wants to sell about 250 units of the Z800 annually, and it has mentioned the introduction of two more bikes in the Indian market later this year. The Versys 1000 and the ER-6n are two bikes that will be on display at Kawasaki's showrooms by mid-2014, but what we're waiting to see is the Z250.
