Meet the new Ducati Desmosedici Stradale V4

News from the Misano World Circuit, Italy came that Ducati has got a new V4 engine, one derived from its MotoGP racer and that will power their future super sports models. It’s called the Desmosedici Stradale.

This is a first for Ducati, to equip a production model bike with a 4-cylinder unit. It’s their new big-boy and the Italian bikemaker has used its MotoGP experience to offer that kind of performance, on-road.While being derived from a MotoGP race engine, the production spec Desmosedici Stradale has been designed to suit real world road use too. At 1103cc, its got a slightly larger displacement, and Ducati states that the power figures ‘exceed’ 208bhp at 13,000rpm and 120Nm between 8750-12,250rpm. It’s paired with a 6-speed ‘box with the DQS up/down system and uses a wet multi-plate anti-patter servo clutch. This new V4 has a 90° configuration to make it compact and centralising the mass. There’s a lot of nerdy details still.

Like the Desmosedici GP bike, the crankshaft is a counter-rotating type to reduce the overall gyroscopic effect and make the bike more agile and faster too. Like the GP bikes, its crank pins offset at 70° involves a Twin Pulse firing sequence for smooth power delivery and a ‘unique signature sound’. The new high-revving Desmo Stradale V4 has the same bore as the GP bike (81mm) and is designed around the Desmodromic system to help it surpass previous Ducati engines.  Another first for the V4 powered production Ducati would be the variable-height air intake horns of the fuelling system, designed to optimise cylinder intake across the rev range and offer an advantage in terms of power delivery and handling.

There’s going to be an R version too of this engine the following year, to be used in production models from 2019. A displacement of less than 1000cc and even higher revs say Ducati, and is intended for track use. The R will provide the brand with the foundation for the homologated version to compete in the SBK championship.

As we know, Ducati bid adieu to the 959 Panigale earlier this year and fittingly it's going to be the new Panigale V4 that will be the first to get the new four-cylinder Desmosedici Stradale engine. The global unveiling of this new Ducati is scheduled for November 5 at EICMA, at 9 PM (set the reminder on your smartphone).

It represents the start of a new chapter for our company, underlining our vitality and an unshakeable commitment to investment in new products", stated Claudio Domenicali, Ducati's CEO, during the presentation of the new V4 power house. "This engine also highlights the close collaboration between Ducati Corse and the factory bike development team, proving just how instrumental racing can be in developing the technology that is later applied on production bikes.”
